About Thalia Theatre

Thalia Theatre, also known as Teatro das Laranjeiras, was a small theatre owned by the 1st Count of Farrobo, Joaquim Pedro Quintela. Originally built in 1825, it was rebuilt and renovated later in 1842. The theater was inaugurated with the opera "II Castello de Spiriti" by Mercadante, responsible for the private opera seasons that Farrobo organized for decades. The Count's extravagant parties were also an example of his cultural and mundane life in his theatre, refered by the French Marshal Castellae, received in Laranjeiras, as “an amazing party, compared to the Tuileries of the first Empire”. In 1862, the theater was practically destroyed by a fire and only the façade was spared from destruction. In the 21st century, the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science commissioned a project to recover the building.
On the theater's façade, the inscription with the motto of Thalia, the muse of comedy, can be seen: HIC MORES HOMINUM CASTIGANTUR.
